Hereford Teen In Line For Eco Award

Sophie Wyness

Hereford teenager Sophie Wyness has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.

Supported by ecological manufacturer, Ecover, the Observer ethical awards aim to reward those pioneering a sustainable future for the country and provide a unique opportunity to recognise and reward the very best products, innovations and schemes that make living ethically achievable.

Sophie, who is 13, a Year 8 student at Bishop's School and a member of the Herefordshire Youth Council, has made the final three in the ?Ecover Award for Young Campaigner of the Year' category.

The award organisers have sought out the most innovative and passionate ethical projects, the most ethical politicians, inventors battling climate change and the young people doing the most to protect the biosphere. Finalists in other categories include world leaders in environmentalism George Monbiot and Al Gore.

From an early age, Sophie has had a desire to stand up to things that are wrong. Her passion for what he believes is right has led her on to make stands that leave many adults feeling that they should perhaps do more themselves to address current problems. Sophie is a seasoned exponent of non-violent direct action techniques and has endured stints in police cells at the ages of 11 and 13 for peacefully protesting against nuclear weapons.

The winner of the Ecover Award for Young Campaigner of the year will receive a grant of £2000 per year for three years to carry out a sustainable project. If she is successful, Sophie plans to use her prize to help other young people to make their voices heard through a series of annual youth forums focused on Global Warming and involving participants from local and regional youth councils all over the country.

The judging panel for the awards includes news presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy, actor Woody Harrelson, Sian Berry of the Green Party, actor and comedian Alistair McGowan, David de Rothschild, founder and creator of Sculpt the Future and Allan Jenkins, editor of The Observer Magazine. The winners of the awards will be announced at an awards event in central London on 7th June.
