Let's Dance

It took 15-year-old Kristy Elliot a couple of years to pluck up the courage to put her name down for break dance classes at The Courtyard.

Now dancing every week with a whole group of new friends and loving every minute of it, she’s about to perform in her first live dance show with the award winning 2FaCeD DaNcE Company at The Courtyard next week, 28, 29 and 30 June. “Now I wonder why I was so nervous,” she laughs. “There’s no pressure on anyone, and you’re having so much fun you forget nerves.”

Kristy, who attends Aylestone High School in Hereford, says she saw 2FaCeD perform a couple of times and thought they were fantastic.

“I love hip hop music, I love to dance but I’d never done anything like it,” she says. “I couldn’t even do a handstand when I started. But I’m only two terms in and I can do some simple steps. I’m hoping I’ll be able to do the flips, and some of the more advanced moves before next year’s show.”

Harry Sebbage who’ll be nine next week and lives in Bodenham, north of Hereford, has been coming down to The Courtyard every Monday after school for the last year. “I’d seen break dance on TV and then my mum took me to peep in at a class and said I could join. It looked quite tricky but once you start classes it gets easier.

“I do some footwork and robotics in the show. Mum and dad think I will be really good and some of my friends from school are coming to watch. This is the first thing I’ve been in except Alice in Wonderland when I was little so I am excited.”

Harry, Kristy, and around 100 other children from across the region will all be taking part in the shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening, June 28, 29, 30, which will also feature the award winning 2FaCeD DaNcE Company. Choreographed by director Tamsin Fitzgerald, Rewind, the company’s new work will feature amazing lighting, an eclectic selection of music and an amazing mix of Street, Break and Contemporary dance. And while they’re at it the dance company will be transforming The Courtyard into a hip hop heaven, with local DJs spinning the latest tunes so the audience can get up and dance in the bar before and after the show.
