Schools Science Festival Website Goes Live
Wyebridge College Pupils tell InSITE what it was all about
Stars In Our Eyes! By Kirsty Harvey and Josh Davies.
Atthe Herefordshire Science Festival held in July 2007 lots of pupils from primary and secondary schools from across the county came to Wyebridge Sports College to experience the fun side of science.
One event was the Star Dome. Steve Watson from Hereford Star Lab organised an astronomy workshop to teach pupils about the earth, sun, moon, stars and planets. He did this by projecting images of space inside an inflatable dome. Steve feels that it is important to teach astronomy. He told us 'It broadens horizons and helps them to look at the world around them'. One pupil, Jess, agd 15, who had been in the Star Dome said 'It is very fascinating to learn about stars. I would love to do it again'. Steve is an amateur astronomer and he aims to open an astronomy club in Herefordshire, where hopefully a new observatory can be built. Another event that took place was a demonstration of birds of prey by falconer Roger James from Abergavenny. He runs the Black Mountains Falconry centre which is home to many birds of prey. Pupils of Wyebridge got to stroke an Eagle Owl, Barn Owl and a Peregrine Falcon. We learnt that a peregrine falcon is the fastest animal in the world traveling at 235 miles an hour!!! The birds had some interesting names like Ben and Gollum!
