Brandon steep on their new single
Brandon Steep ‘HMF’ Review by our music reporter Sean Wyer
Hereford’s Brandon Steep’s debut single, ‘HMF’, is fresh and original. A catchy melody and sharp lyrics make HMF a musical masterpiece, which has been on repeat in my head for days, and occasionally in my shower, much to the demise of anyone unfortunate enough to be plagued by my singing.
At a glance, one may be forgiven in thinking that Steep are a generic, Arctic Monkeys-esque indie band. However, after 20 seconds of this single I was quickly re-educated. Their distinctively uncategorisable style is, despite the cliché, unmatchable.
This single is an invigorating change to the recent, drab churnings of so-called 'indie' bands.
The AA side’s first track, HMF, is zesty and upbeat. HMF is stimulating and totally individual, and is an exemplary product of Brandon Steep’s fruit salad of talent and musical style. It is complimented perfectly by track 2, ‘I am the pawn’, which is a combination of lyrical witticisms supported by a flawless tune.
This single is an invigorating change to the recent, drab churnings of so-called ‘indie’ bands (think Razorlight, et al), and hopefully signifies the beginning of a fruitful repertoire of releases from the guys. After a while of spreading their musical marmalade over Hereford, while saving a bit for the rest of the nation, the guys have finally decided to share the products of their genius in 7” or downloadable format. If you haven’t already, download it from iTunes or 7digital, or buy a good, hearty ole’ vinyl from HMV, Amazon or Tree Brain Store (or Temple Records in Hereford).
