From India to Hereford
The newest member of our InSITE correspondents team Rose Cherian tells us her experience of moving to Hereford.
O
n the 12th of June my ultimate dream finally came true ... At last my family and I were set to move to England. We reached Heathrow at 8:30pm and as I stepped outside I couldn’t believe just how bright the sky was. In India it would have been dark by that time, even in June. We got into a taxi and began our 3 hr journey from London to Hereford. My family and I were so exhausted that it didn’t take us long to fall asleep in the taxi. At half past eleven we reached our lovely new home but I was shocked to see how similar all the houses were. As though they were built to look like identical twins, in India each house has its own features to identify it. I wondered how on earth I was supposed to find my house if I ever got lost!
I have adapted to my new lifestyle with ease and I love being a student in Hereford
I had to go to an interview at the sixth form college which I was very scared and worried about. I was afraid they wouldn’t accept me if my level of English or my grades weren’t up to their expectations. All my fears and tensions melted away when I met Mrs Annsnee, my interviewer. She made me feel so comfortable and assured me that I was acceptable. I was very nervous and quite frightened about enrolling at college in September but when I got there it was nowhere near as bad as I imagined. I study Politics, Communication Studies, Sociology, Maths and English and they are all really interesting.
Before moving here I had seen programmes like Hollyoaks which give the impression that British teenage girls are rude, mean and ignorant so that’s what I expected. Actually living here has changed my view dramatically, the friends I have now are the most wonderful friends I have ever had. I have adapted to my new lifestyle with ease and I love being a student in Hereford. Moving here has opened up a lot of opportunities to me and I can’t wait to go to University.
