one

Words and Verse by Fariya

O
n December 27th 2007 the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Ms. Benazir Bhutto, was assassinated. Pakistan quickly fell to pieces. All over the country street violence broke out, people began looting and setting buildings alight. Here at InSITE, in the comfortable and wealthy town of Hereford, we are lucky enough to have first hand information from 14yr old Fariya who lives in Karachi where Ms.Bhutto was originally from and where the violence is reported to be at it’s worst.

Fariya could do nothing but watch as her hometown was torn apart. To help us understand what it might be like to be a young person living in Pakistan Fariya has kindly agreed to share some of her thoughts and feelings with us. Words by Fariya:

The rich are becoming poor and the poor even poorer

“Jive Bhutto” – (May Bhutto Live) Daughter of the East, Princess of Pakistan, Ms. Bhutto has passed away. The situation in Pakistan is worsening every minute of every day. The rich are becoming poor and the poor even poorer. There is no more gaiety for the citizens of Pakistan, just darkness. People are being killed without pity, the roads and railways are damaged, institutions are closed and shops ignited. The streets may be miserable but we always have hope and we feel enlightenment as we mourn together and shout “zinda hai bhutto zinda hai” meaning .

Verse by Fariya:

Bhutto is alive, He is alive
Bhutto ajj bhi zinda hai, Bhutto kal bhi zinda tha
(Bhutto is alive today, he was alive yesterday)
Hope for all of us, Shine of a risen Sun
Remember, You're alive
All imposture and lies, the news of your martyrdom
Remember, You're alive
I do not trust anyone, for I know you are immortal
Remember, You're alive
Look at the fools, they mourn and say you died
Remember, You're alive. I tell the world with pride you haven't died, you're forever alive in my heart
So remember, You're alive
