CALLING ALL COMIC HEROES!
Are you into MANGA, SUPERHEROES, THE BEANO or just comics in general?
Are you a budding comic artist, do you long to see your characters in print? Then maybe we can help. If you’re 16 plus, with a passion for comic art and live in the West Midlands, then Hi8us Midlands’ latest FREE comic art scheme called COMIX, could be for you.
All the lucky winners will also get to work with people on similar schemes across Europe and get a supported trip to a comic art festival in Spain as well as a trip to the Birmingham International Comics Show.
20 talented individuals will get the opportunity to develop their skills with John McCrea (X-MEN, SPIDERMAN, THE HULK), Hunt Emerson (THE BEANO, WALL STREET JOURNAL, FORTEAN TIMES), Laura Howell (THE BEANO, THE GUARDIAN), Asia Alfasi (IMAF WINNER, BEST NEW MANGA, BLOOMSBURY GRAPHIC NOVELIST) and Andi Watson (GEISHA, BUFFY) amongst others.
The scheme will take place in Birmingham between June 2009 and November 2009.
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS The deadline for all postal or email submissions is Monday 1st June 2009.
HOW TO APPLY COMIX is a competitive scheme only open to people who are 16+ living in the West Midlands. We are committed to Equal Opportunities and welcome applications from all groups — women are particularly encouraged as they’re still under-represented in the comics industry.
Applicants don’t need any previous qualifications just passion, talent/potential and a commitment to work hard! All participants need to submit examples of their best and most recent work. We will be looking for good photocopies or scans of 2-4 pages of pencilled, original continuous comic strip (no posters), preferably without lettering. Full guidelines for submissions are in the application pack.
DROP-IN RECRUITMENT WORKSHOP We will be running a drop-in recruitment workshop on Tuesday 26th May 2009, 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm where applicants will get to meet John and Hunt and have their worked looked at with a view to gaining a place on the scheme. Details of how to book your place are below.
WORKSHOPS The workshops will run across 10 Saturdays starting 6th June 2009 and ending in late September 2009. All workshop dates are provided on the application form. Additional dates for support sessions and trips to comic festivals will be announced throughout. The Birmingham International Comics Show takes place 3rd to 4th October 2009.
