Work Experience Experiences!

Aisha Townsend

Aisha Townsend provides an audio report on how people view work experience

Yes, it’s that time of the year, when troupes of terrible teenagers invade Herefordshire’s offices and businesses, in search for work experience. It has become more and more difficult for young people to squeeze their way into the working world.

Why? I believe adults have no trust, plus the health and safety issues and of course all those annoying forms. Other than the prospect of free labour many employers cannot be bothered to put so much effort in. However, if you’re lucky enough to get a good placement were the people generally care for you and your work experience then it is brilliant.

I did my work experience at The Rural Media Company and it was a really worthwhile week. I had a go at operating cameras, animating, interviewing people, writing articles for inSITE online magazine, making audio vox pops, helped at an afterschool workshop and generally had a great time experiencing what a job in media could be like.

Some people say that work experience should be at a different time of the year or for different ages. Some would like pupils to have more responsibility, some say less. Some would like to see more work placements open for young people, like the police, as it can be difficult to find a placement close to people’s interests that is open for young people.
