We Will Rock You
Vivid, intense lights. Compelling, pulsating music - by Lara Goodwin
The scene is set for one of the greatest musicals ever performed at Birmingham Hippodrome. As I sit in my seat the ground shudders as the spine tingling sound of ‘innuendo’ erupts around the auditorium. Created by the infamous Queen and the gifted Ben Elton We Will Rock You was bound to be exhilarating.
The story takes place in the future where everything is controlled and monitored and individualism is shunned. It tells the story of how Galileo, Scaramouche and the Bohemians attempt to fulfill the rock and roll prophecy.
I went to see We Will Rock You on July 1st, the opening night at Birmingham Hippodrome. It was a sensational night and ended with a real buzz around the theatre. The resident band was faultless in the creation of the Queen music and the vocalists astounding.

There were dazzling performances from each individual actor and the song ‘I Want It All,’ performed by Georgina Hagen and Wayne Robinson, was exceptional. A surprise member of the cast was Jonathon Wilkes playing Khashoggi; he was a good singer and a talented actor. The sheer energy generated by the dancers was phenomenal and they were inch perfect in the choreography.

It is a breathtaking performance and I would recommend it to anyone, any age. It’s a genius piece of writing, and magnificent music.
