Filling the Gap
Ruben Robinson and Daniel Campbell talk about being on the Rank Foundation GAP Scheme
Ruben joined The Rural Media Company as a Rank Foundation GAP Trainee in September 2008. He had previously been involved with lots of film projects with RMC as an actor, researcher, camera operator and director. His role as a GAP trainee involved providing support to the staff working in the Youth Times project , assisting in the delivery of media workshops and providing support for young people developing skills in media.
Ruben worked with groups of young people to complete an incredible amount of new video work including the Summer school 08 evaluation video, a Youth Times promo video, a 10 min promo for Kingstone high school and a Media Literacy video for the Community Media Association.
The Gap scheme was the perfect opportunity for Ruben to develop the skills and confidence he needed to go onto further education and he plans to go on and do a Film Production degree at Bournemouth Arts Institute. We will miss having Ruben around, he was a huge asset to the project and we hope he will stay involved for a long time to come. “The nine months I spent with Youth Times gave me a good grounding in working life. The gap scheme was an exciting alternative for me, one that I couldn’t possibly have expected to be as rewarding as it was. I have grown up a lot through helping others. I feel that I have truly made a difference to Rural Media’s Youth Times project, I will miss it greatly but I now know myself better and that I can do and be anything I want”
The Rural Media Company have supported several young people through the completion of the Rank Foundation GAP scheme and all have gained valuable experience.
The GAP Scheme is sponsored by The Rank Foundation which is a grant-making charity that was established in 1953 by Lord and Lady Rank. Lord Rank was a dominant figure in the world of British Cinema.
