Respect

Olle Grove writes about his passion for the beautiful game and the new respect programme from the FA.

atch any football match on the TV and you can almost guarantee that you’ll witness a dispute between players, managers or fans with referees. Thankfully, in most cases, it is dealt with and those involved are disciplined. However, it’s becoming more and more common that promising young footballers are succumbing to these flaws. They see their ‘idols’ on TV having a go at the referee and think “Well Rooney does it, I will too”.

It’s not good for the game and it certainly isn’t good for the child’s parents who have to pay the fine for them being sent off. This is where The FA’s Respect programme comes into play. It aims to reduce the amount of abuse shown in local and National football by helping Captains and Referees work together to manage player behaviour.

That’s not all though, many children quit football every year due to pushy parents so The FA are combating that too with the Respect programme. They are giving clubs pitch side barriers for parents and spectators to stand behind.

Ok, so it’s not going to force them to be quiet but it’s certainly making them think about their actions.

Overall, it’s becoming more and more pleasant for all involved in the Beautiful Game. Check out The FA’s website or why not get involved in a local football club to see for yourself.
